In one day I knew I had a problem. I just spent four hours with my plasma cutting in my right hand. I was cutting out patterns I had traced on a sheet of metal. These forms were to be my coffee table again. Everyone complained to me that I have a coffee. I thought, "I'll show you," and began to build one.
Because a metal table out you ask? The quick answer is that I'm not much of a carpenter at the time. On the other hand, I used to weldprofessional and I knew I could do something in metal. Here's how it started, a metal table.
Now, if you knew me, you know you can not just something normal. My brain is the scheming type that has to do things differently than normal. I wanted a table that would knock people socks off of it. I thought a funky table, metal wheels and lights would do the trick. You know what? He did.
I really had a ball makingthis table. I mean, I really enjoyed it. So I started to design others. I started with pictures of my work to everyone I knew. On top of that, I was getting good feedback. I just found a new hobby, making furniture. Who would have thought that I would pick the furniture as a hobby.
While making this first table a problem.
That 's what I said in my right hand. After the plasma cutting of all parts of the wrist really began to hurt. Whilewelding professionally there was always the threat of carpal tunnel syndrome. Welders are constantly afflicted by this and other accidents caused by repetitive movements.
If you repeat something over and over and over and over again, your body gives to a certain extent. After the cut sides of this table, I knew that I could not do this for a hobby. I knew that something should change or the new hobby would break my body.
At that moment I began to investigate Hobby CNC. I call it"Hobby" CNC, because this is what I found. There were small groups of enthusiasts on the Internet that were building these machines for fun. I thought this was the ticket.
My first thought on CNC ...
I thought, "If I could build a CNC plasma cutting table?"
I could connect my plasma cutting
Create a program on the one hand I wanted to
Cut the different parts of the contents of my heart
Save time
And finally ...
Save my wristdreaded Carpel Tunnel Syndrome.
I was not afraid of technology to get started. I grew up in fabrication shops in the Midwest and had seen these machines in action. This machine "Operators" were always appreciated in the store. He has always made more money and has always been working overtime as they wanted. I decided if they could do, I can do.
CNC hobby projects were not cheap at this time. I thought I'd invest $ 4,000 - $ 5,000 to build myTable (fell). Keep in mind that it was in 2000-2001. For whatever reason, does not scare me. I have always a good challenge and this has been. With blind faith, I ordered a CNC control and went to my local steel yard at the back of my truck with steel fill.
I did not know ...
There was a steep learning curve with CNC. Building a frame for the machine is only a small part of the project. Today it is much easier. The software, componentsand suppliers are better. There is a whole craft that has grown up around CNC to support. Some of the best people in the world make a living servicing CNC Hobbyist needs.
For some reason I thought if I just build this machine would spit out parts whenever I wanted. Simple, easy, simple running in my head. Over time I started to do so. I had no teacher, but I started getting details of what I was doing the learning.
Other things I hadlearn along the way:
CAD Software
Component design
CAM
Preparation of parts for machining
Machining simulation
Basics cutting
