You can easily develop BlackBerry software applications as you have the right tools on your computer: a Java Software Development Kit (JDK) and a BlackBerry Java Development Environment (JDE). These tools can be downloaded for free from Sun Microsystems and Research In Motion website.
The JDK provides the basic tools for compiling Java source code into Java bytecode interpreter. The JDK provides the Java interpreter used to run many ofdevelopment of tools in JDE.
BlackBerry JDE provides specific tools to transform Java bytecode into a special format used by the interpreter on the Java-like BlackBerry handhelds. It also provides debugging and editing tools for software development seriously.
Begin by determining which version of the BlackBerry operating system (OS) to be the target. This determines which version of JDE to use that version of the JDK in turn determinesto install.
The general rule is: Always use a version of JDE or less than the version of operating system you're targeting. For example, if you're targeting OS 4.3 You can use JDE 4.0, 4.1, 4.2 or 4.3 to develop the application, but not 4.5, 4.7 or 5.0. (Only the defeated JDE 4.4., 4.6, 4.8 and 4.9, among others.) This is not a rigid rule, because sometimes you can use a later version of JDE applications running on older versions of the operating system to be built, but RIM doesn t 'guarantee that these applicationswork or even load on older versions of the operating system. Several versions of the JDK and the JDE can coexist on the same machine without problems if they get in the correct order: JDK 1.4 first, followed by JDE 4.0, JDK 1.5, followed by JDE 4.1 to 4, 2, JDK 1.6, followed by JDE version remaining.
